Oat seed oil is pressed from the seeds of the oat plant, Avena sativa. It is a rich, golden oil with a mild, cereal-like smell that most people find pleasant and unobtrusive. This guide covers what oat seed oil is, how it differs from the other oat ingredients you see on labels, and how it is used.
What is in oat seed oil?
The label names one ingredient, Avena Sativa Kernel Oil, the oil pressed from the oat kernel, and gives no content of anything; so this page names none either. Oats turn up in many skin products in other forms as well, and the next section sets them apart.
How is it different from colloidal oatmeal?
Colloidal oatmeal is the whole grain milled very finely and suspended in water: it is a powder, not an oil. Oat extract is usually a water- or glycerine-based liquid. Oat seed oil is a pressed fatty oil from the seed. All three come from the same plant and behave completely differently.
What does it feel like?
Rich rather than light. It sits on the skin longer than a thin oil like grapeseed, which is precisely what you want on rough, dry areas and precisely what you do not want on an oily face.
What do people use oat seed oil for?
- on dry skin and rough patches such as elbows, knees and heels
- on nails and cuticles, against splitting
- as an oil for a dry scalp
- as a massage oil, neat or in a blend
How do you use it on the body?
Massage it into damp skin straight after a shower, so it holds the water that is already there. On elbows, knees and heels you can do that daily, in small amounts.
How do you use it on nails and hands?
A few drops on the nails and cuticles, gently massaged in. It keeps the cuticles supple and saves you splits. Best done in the evening, when your hands are not about to touch a keyboard.
How do you use it on the scalp?
Work a small amount into the scalp with your fingertips, leave it twenty minutes, then wash with a mild shampoo. Once a week is plenty.
Can you use it on the face?
You can, but it is on the rich side for most facial skin. If you want to try it, use one drop, at night, and mix it into a lighter oil rather than using it neat.
How should oat seed oil be stored?
Cool, dark and closed. Keep the bottle out of direct light and away from a steamy bathroom window. If the smell turns sharp, replace it.
Is oat seed oil gluten free?
Oats are frequently handled alongside wheat, so cross-contact is possible and no pressed oil is guaranteed free of it. If you react to gluten on the skin, this is not the oil to experiment with.
Where does Aza Natural's oat seed oil come from?
We sell oat seed oil pure, with nothing added. Other pure oils are in the pure oils section.
Other single-ingredient oils for dry skin, with the same kind of guide, are in the dry skin collection.
