Een goede kloven zalf doet meer dan een laagje over de scheur leggen en hopen dat het dichtgaat. Kloven zijn diepe barsten in de huid die pijnlijk zijn, soms bloeden en hardnekkig terugkomen als je ze niet goed behandelt. De meeste kloven zalven in de drogist bevatten vaseline als hoofdingrediënt, aangevuld met synthetische verdikkingsmiddelen en een vleugje parfum. Dat sluit de kloof af, maar herstelt niets. Sheaboter is de vetstof uit de noten van de sheaboom, Vitellaria paradoxa, die in de Sahel groeit. Bij kamertemperatuur is het een vaste, romige boter; zodra ze contact maakt met de huid smelt ze tot een olieachtige laag. Ongeraffineerde sheaboter is niet gebleekt en niet ontgeurd en houdt daardoor haar eigen kleur en geur: off-white tot lichtgeel, licht romig en nootachtig.
Bij ongeraffineerde boter verschilt de kleur per partij, doordat de noten uit verschillende streken komen en op verschillende manieren worden verwerkt. Off-white tot lichtgeel hoort erbij. Puur wit of felgeel hoort het juist niet te zijn: dat wijst op bleken, kleuren of toevoegingen.
Neem een klein stukje, wrijf het tussen je handen tot het smelt en masseer het in op een licht vochtige huid, bijvoorbeeld na het douchen. Een boter is vetrijk, dus je hebt weinig nodig. Voor handen en voeten is het praktisch om het ’s avonds te doen: de boter krijgt dan de hele nacht de tijd en je veegt er niets van af.
Naast de boters staan er zepen op sheabasis in, los te koop en ook in een set met een zeephouder van olijfhout. Een milde zeep laat meer van het eigen vetlaagje op handen en voeten staan dan een sterk ontvettende, waardoor de boter erna minder werk heeft. De zepen zijn er in negen varianten, van naturel tot kurkuma, neem en hibiscus.
