Tomato seed oil is cold-pressed from the seeds of the tomato, Solanum lycopersicum. It is golden yellow to lightly orange, thin, and sinks in quickly without leaving much shine. This guide covers what tomato seed oil is, why it exists at all, and how it is used in skincare.
Where does tomato seed oil come from?
From what is left over. Tomato seeds are a residue of juice, passata and sauce production. Instead of being thrown away, they are pressed. This oil exists because of something that was already there, which is a rare thing to be able to say about a cosmetic ingredient.
What is in it?
Mostly linoleic acid, the omega-6 fatty acid, plus lycopene and beta-carotene. Those last two are the pigments that make a tomato red, and they explain the faint orange cast of the oil.
What does it feel like on the skin?
Thin and quick. It spreads far and absorbs without leaving a greasy layer, which is why it is used under a cream or under make-up rather than only at night.
How do you use it on the face?
A few drops on cleansed, slightly damp skin, or a couple of drops stirred into your day cream in the palm of your hand. Press it in rather than rubbing it.
Why is tomato seed oil popular in beard oil?
Because it is thin enough to keep a beard oil light. It can make up half the oil phase; top it up with jojoba or argan oil and a fragrance oil of your choice. A beard oil built entirely from heavy oils sits on the hair instead of in it.
Can you use it in your own blends?
Yes. It works in a serum, a night cream or a facial oil blend, and it pairs well with a heavier oil that needs thinning out.
Does it stain?
The colour is faint and the amounts are small, so in practice it does not. If you are using a lot of it on a light-coloured pillowcase, give it a few minutes to absorb first.
How should tomato seed oil be stored?
Cool, dark and closed. High-linoleic oils oxidise faster than oleic ones. Keep it out of the light and replace it if the smell turns sharp.
Should you patch test it?
Yes, as with any new oil. Tomato is a nightshade; if you react to nightshades, test on the inside of the forearm and wait a day before going further.
